Getting There By Air

All three airports serving New York City (John F Kennedy International, La Guardia and Newark International Airport) are operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (tel: (212) 435 7000; website: ). Ground transportation information for these airports is available from the port authority (tel: 1 800 247 7433) daily 8:00am - 6:00pm

John F Kennedy Airport (JFK)

Situated in Queens, 15 miles southeast of central Manhattan, JFK is New York’s busiest airport, handling almost 41 million passengers a year.

Transport to the city:

Air Ride (tel: 1 800 247 7433) provides information on ground transportation to and from JFK and parking lot information. The Air Train also connects with Long Island Rail Road and with New York Rapid Transit subways (NYCT) to the Howard Beach Subway Station. From there, the connection with the MTA  ‘A’ train (tel: (718) 330 1234) takes approximately 90 minutes to central Manhattan, stopping at a number of stations with further connections on the way.

The New York Airport Service (tel: (718) 875 8200) express bus operates a direct service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal or Grand Central Station. Buses depart JFK every 15–30 minutes, daily 6:15am -11:10pm .

The Super Shuttle Manhattan (tel: (212) 258 3826), available on demand 24 hours a day, is a shared door-to-door minibus service that travels anywhere between 23rd and 96th Streets. Super Shuttle courtesy phones are located in the baggage claim area.

Currently, Taxis to Manhattan are a flat rate US$45, plus tolls and tips.

The airport is located in Queens, 8 miles east of central Manhattan. La Guardia International handles approximately 24.5 million passengers a year, although almost all flights are domestic.

Transport to the city:

Air Ride (tel: 1 800 247 7433; website: ) provides information on ground transportation and parking. Public transport is available on the MTA (tel: (718) 330 1234) bus M60, which intersects with all subway lines as it crosses to the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The bus operates daily 4:50am –1:00am .

An express bus service, with departures from La Guardia International every 30 minutes daily 7am -11:pm, is provided by New York Airport Service (tel: (718) 875 8200), travelling to the Port Authority Bus Terminal or Grand Central Station.

Super Shuttle Manhattan (tel: (212) 258 3826), available on demand 24 hours a day, is a shared door-to-door minibus service that travels anywhere between 23rd and 96th Streets. Super Shuttle courtesy phones are located in the baggage claim area. Other shuttle services are also available.

Currently, taxis (metered) to Manhattan cost around US$25-35, plus tolls and tips.

The airport is located in New Jersey, 16 miles southwest of central Manhattan. It handles just under 12 million passengers a year, travelling to both domestic and international destinations.

Transport to the city:

Air Ride (tel: 1 800 247 7433) is an information provider for ground transportation and parking. The NJ Transit Airtrain service (tel: 1 800 772 2222 ) connects Newark International to Penn Station in Manhattan via New Jersey Transit. Trains run weekdays from 4:59am -2:00am and weekends from 6:15am -1:31am).

Coach USA (tel: (212) 964 6233 or 1 877 863 9275) offers bus services to Penn Station, Port Authority Bus Terminal, Grand Central Station and several Midtown hotels. Buses run every 15-30 minutes daily 6:00am - 2:00am, weekends from 5:00am -1:30am.

Getting There By Rail

New York City’s rail services are primarily operated by Amtrak (tel: (215) 349 2152 or 1 800 872 7245). New high-speed services on the Eastern seaboard are a viable alternative to air travel on shorter routes, such as to Boston and Washington, DC.

The city has two main stations. Grand Central Station, 42nd Street and Park Avenue, is the terminus for Metro-North Railroad (tel: (212) 340 3000), with services to upstate New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Pennsylvania Station, referred to locally as Penn Station, 34th Street and Sixth Avenue, serves both Amtrak and the Long Island Railroad (tel: (718) 217 5477 ).

Coach services:

The Port Authority Bus Terminal, 628 Eighth Avenue at 40th Street (tel: (212) 564 8484 ), handles long-distance and regional buses, as well as buses to the airports. Greyhound (tel: 1 800 229 9424; website: ) operates bus services that link New York City to points throughout the USA and into Canada and Mexico.

Public Transport

Public transport in New York is run by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), New York City Transit (tel: (718) 330 1234).

New York’s subway is fast, air conditioned, cheap. The vast network of 24 routes, identified by letters or by numbers, serves almost 500 stations throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.

Staten Island is served by the small-scale MTA Staten Island Railway (tel: (718) 966 SIRT or 966 7478), operating 24 hours a day. . Entrance is gained from a subway MetroCard, available at subway stations and newsagents. Services operate 24 hours; on average, subway trains run every 2 to 5 minutes during rush hour (every 10 to 15 minutes during off-peak times and every 20 minutes daily Midnight -5:00am).

Bus services are extensive and bus stops are located on street corners approximately every two or three blocks. Bus fare are paid with a MetroCard, subway token or exact change. Buses operate 24 hours daily.

Events Around Town

Annual events include the St. Patrick's Day Parade , Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Tribeca Film Festival, and free performances in Central Park at Summerstage.

The city's two Major League Baseball teams are the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.

The city is represented in the NFL by the New York Jets and New York Giants, although both teams play their home games in Giants Stadium in nearby New Jersey.

The New York Rangers represent the city in the National Hockey League.

New York is represented by the Major League Soccer team, Red Bull New York. The "Red Bulls" play their home games at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

New York 's NBA team is the New York Knicks and the city's WNBA team is the New York Liberty.

The U.S. Tennis Open (held in Queens) is the fourth and final event of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments.

The New York City Marathon is the world's largest. The Millrose Games is an annual track and field meet whose featured event is the Wanamaker Mile.

Boxing is also a very prominent part of the city's sporting scene, with events like the Amateur Boxing Golden Gloves being held at Madison Square Garden each year.
