Getting There By Air Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Located on Santa Monica Bay, LAX is 15 miles from the city centre and is the world's fifth-busiest airport, handling almost 58 million passengers in 2005. Transport to the city: Taxis can be found at the lower level. Passengers are presented with a ticket stating typical fares to major destinations. Several private shuttle services will drop airport passengers at the door of their hotel or other destinations. These include Super Shuttle (tel: (310) 782 6600 or 1 800 258 3826 ), Xpress Shuttle (tel: (310) 323 7222 or 1 800 427 748) and Prime Time Shuttle (tel: (310) 536 7922 or 1 800 733 8267 ). A free shuttle bus runs between terminals and from the airport to Parking Lot C, where passengers can connect with MTA (tel: 1 800 266 6883/COMMUTE ) buses, which run to most places in the city. There is also a free shuttle to Aviation Station on the MTA Metro Green Line. Pick-up is on the lower arrival level under the LAX Shuttle sign. Ontario International Airport (ONT) Bob Hope Airport (Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport) (BUR) Bob Hope Airport is served by six domestic airlines only, serving some 5.5 million passengers in 2005. It is the closest airport to Downtown LA (13 miles), Hollywood and the Valley. Transport to the city: Metrolink (Monday to Friday only), MTA Bus lines and Amtrak ( have nearby stations at Burbank and there are free connecting shuttles to/from the airport. The airport is also connected by many MTA bus lines. Taxis are readily available. John Wayne Airport (Santa Ana, Orange County) Located about 42 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, John Wayne Airport served more than 9 million travellers in 2005. Transport to the city: Taxis, limousines and shuttles provide service to the city. Getting There By Water Located in San Pedro Bay, some 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles, 425 South Palos Verdes Street, San Pedro (tel: (310) 732 7678T) is one of the world's biggest and busiest seaports. The Port's World Cruise Center handled over 1 million cruise passengers in 2005 and is a popular stop-over for visiting cruise ships. The area includes recreational facilities such as a Maritime Museum, Marina, Aquarium and the newly opened Wilmington Information Center. Ferry services: The Catalina Express (tel: 1 800 481 3470) operates a service to Santa Catalina Island. Transport to the city: The shuttle bus Community Connection 142 operates from Ports O' Call to Long Beach, where various MTA buses are available. Also at Long Beach, the Metro Rail station Transit Mall is on the Blue Line, which goes to Downtown. Taxis are also readily available.
The Los Angeles terminal for both is Union Station, located at 800 North Alameda Street on the edge of the Downtown business district. Coach services: The Greyhound (tel: (213) 629 8400 or 1 800 229 9424 ) coach station is at 1716 East Seventh Street. Greyhound provides coach services to cities nationwide. Public Transport The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) (tel: (213) 922 4682 or 1 800 266 6883/COMMUTE) operates one of the largest fleets in the nation - 200 Metro Bus lines (buses) as well as four Metro Rail lines (subway). The Metro Rail system has nearly 96km (60 miles) of interconnected subway and light rail tracks, covering 62 stations over four lines. The Blue Line connects Downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Green Line runs along the median of Century Freeway and links Norwalk and El Segundo. The Red Line connects Union Station, Downtown LA, Hollywood, Universal City and North Hollywood. The Gold Line runs from Union Station to Pasadena. A monthly, weekly or Metro Day Pass is good for unlimited rides on Metro Bus or Metro Rail, or passengers can buy 10 Metro tokens, which can be used for one-way fares on either bus or rail. Many hotels, local convenience and grocery stores and Metro Customer Centers sell Metro passes and tokens. Downtown Los Angeles also has its own bus system called DASH ( Operated by LADOT) (tel: 1 800 252 9040). Maps and schedules are available on the bus or from a hotel concierge and signs are posted throughout the Downtown Los Angeles Visitor Information Center Hollywood Visitor Information Center These are the two walk-in visitor information centres in the city. The organisations below also provide information online or by telephone. Beverly Hills Visitors Bureau West Hollywood Convention and Visitors Bureau Passes The CityPass allows free admission to four Hollywood attractions: Starline Tours of Hollywood, Redline Tours, Hollywood Wax Museum, and a choice of either Kodak Theatre Guided Tour or Hollywood Museum in the Max Factor Building. It is valid for 30 days from the first use and can be purchased online or from the first attraction visited. Go LA Card (tel: 1 800 887 9103) offers a one to multi-day card for free admissions to over 35 attractions. The Cruise LA Card (tel: (213) 624 7300 or 1 800 228 2452) offers discounts for almost 40 attractions and is available to cruise passengers free of charge from travel agents. Around Town Important landmarks in Los Angeles include Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Kodak Theatre, Griffith Observatory, Getty Center, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Hollywood Sign, Capitol Records Tower, Hollywood Bowl, Watts Towers, LA Zoo and La Placita Olvera. Hollywood Boulevard is where you can find some of the biggest tourist attractions in the city - The Walk of Fame for its stars, Grauman's Chinese Theatre for its celebrity hand and foot prints. Sports Franchises include the LA Dodgers, (Dodger Stadium), LA Lakers, (Staples Center), LA Clippers, (Staples Center), LA Galaxy, (Home Depot Center), and the LA Kings, (Staples Center). |
